How Much Do Dentures Cost in Australia? (2026 Guide)

How Much Do Dentures Cost in Australia?

If you're looking into dentures — whether for yourself or a parent — the first question is usually the same: how much is this going to cost me?

I get it. Dentures are a significant investment, and you want to know what you're up for before you walk through the door. The problem is, most websites give you a vague "it depends" and leave you guessing.

I'm Hussein — I'm a dental prosthetist with 14 years experience and my own laboratory in Sydney. I'm going to give you the most honest breakdown I can. Actual ranges. What affects the price. And how to make sure you're not overpaying.

What's the Average Cost of Dentures in Australia?

Here's a realistic guide to what you can expect to pay in 2026. These are typical ranges across Australia — prices in Sydney may sit toward the higher end due to lab and clinic costs.

Denture TypeTypical Price Range (AUD)
Full dentures (upper or lower)$1,200 – $3,500 per arch
Full set (upper + lower)$2,400 – $6,500
Partial dentures (acrylic)$800 – $2,500
Partial dentures (metal frame / chrome)$1,200 – $3,500
Implant-retained dentures$4,000 – $10,000+
Immediate dentures$1,500 – $3,500 per arch
Denture reline$300 – $600
Denture repair$100 – $350

These are ballpark figures. Every mouth is different, and the final cost depends on several things I'll explain below.

What Affects the Cost of Dentures?

1. The Type of Denture You Need

Full dentures replace all your teeth. Partial dentures replace some while keeping your remaining natural teeth. Implant-retained dentures clip onto implants in your jaw for maximum stability. Each type has a different level of complexity, materials, and time — so the price varies.

Not sure which type is right for you? I cover the differences in detail in my full vs partial dentures guide.

2. Materials Used

Not all dentures are made equal. Cheaper dentures use basic acrylic and stock teeth. Higher-quality dentures use premium acrylic, better teeth, and more precise manufacturing. The difference shows in how they look, how they fit, and how long they last.

I use quality materials in my own lab — because I'm the one who has to look you in the eye at the fitting. If it's not right, that's on me.

3. Who Makes Them

Here's something most people don't realise: at a lot of clinics, the person you see isn't the person who makes your dentures. Your impressions get sent to an external lab, and someone who's never met you makes them.

I do it differently. I take your impressions, I make your dentures in my own lab, and I fit them myself. One person, every step. That level of control means better fit — and fewer costly adjustments down the track.

4. How Many Appointments Are Involved

A standard set of dentures usually takes 3–5 appointments over 2–4 weeks. More complex cases — like implant-retained dentures or full-mouth rehabilitations — may require more visits. Each visit is part of getting the fit right.

5. Your Location

Prices vary across Australia. Sydney and Melbourne tend to sit at the higher end. Regional areas can sometimes be lower. I visit 15+ clinics across Greater Sydney and regional NSW — including Bella Vista, Liverpool, Blacktown, Bankstown, and Taree — so you don't have to travel far to find me.

Can You Get Dentures on a Health Fund?

Yes — if you have private health insurance with extras cover, you'll usually get a rebate on dentures. The amount depends on your fund and your level of cover.

Here's how it typically works:

  1. You book a consultation and get a quote
  2. I provide you with the item numbers
  3. You check with your fund what they'll cover
  4. You pay the gap (the difference between the total cost and the rebate)

Some funds cover 50–80% of the cost, depending on your plan. Others cover less. It's always worth checking before you start.

Tip: If you're close to the end of the calendar year and haven't used your dental extras, you might be able to split treatment across two benefit periods — getting two lots of rebate instead of one. Ask me about this at your consultation.

What About Government-Funded Dentures?

Some states offer subsidised or free dentures through the public dental system. In NSW, you may be eligible if you hold a:

  • Health Care Card
  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card

The catch? Wait times can be long — sometimes 12 months or more. And the options may be limited compared to what a private prosthetist can offer.

If you're eligible, it's worth getting on the list. But if you need dentures sooner — or want more options — seeing a private prosthetist like me is the faster route.

How to Avoid Overpaying for Dentures

Get a Clear Quote Upfront

Any reputable prosthetist should give you a written quote before starting work. If someone won't tell you the cost until you're already committed, walk away.

I give every patient a clear quote at their first consultation. No surprises.

Don't Just Go for the Cheapest Option

I understand budgets are tight. But the cheapest dentures often cost more in the long run — because they don't fit well, they break sooner, and you end up paying for relines, repairs, or replacements earlier than you should.

A well-made denture that fits properly from day one will save you money over 5–10 years.

Ask Who's Actually Making Your Dentures

This is the question most people don't think to ask. If your dentures are being sent to an overseas lab, the quality control is out of your prosthetist's hands. I make every denture myself — so the quality is my responsibility, and I take that seriously.

What Does a Free Consultation Include?

When you come to see me for a free consultation, here's what happens:

  1. I assess your mouth — current teeth, gums, bone structure, any existing dentures
  2. I explain your options — in plain English, not dental jargon
  3. I give you a quote — clear, written, with item numbers for your health fund
  4. You decide — no pressure, no commitment

The consultation is about giving you the information you need to make a good decision. That's it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do full dentures cost in Sydney?

Full dentures in Sydney typically cost between $1,200 and $3,500 per arch, or $2,400 to $6,500 for a full set (upper and lower). The exact price depends on materials, complexity, and who makes them. I provide a clear quote at your free consultation.

Are dentures covered by Medicare?

Medicare does not cover dentures. However, private health insurance with extras cover usually provides a rebate. Government-funded options may be available if you hold a concession card, but wait times can be long.

How long do dentures last?

A well-made set of dentures typically lasts 5–10 years before needing replacement. During that time, you may need occasional relines (every 2–3 years) as your gums change shape. Proper care and regular check-ups help them last longer.

Is it worth paying more for quality dentures?

In my experience — yes. Better materials, better fit, and better craftsmanship mean more comfort, fewer problems, and longer lifespan. Cheap dentures often end up costing more in repairs and replacements over time.
