What Is a Dental Prosthetist?
If you've been told you need dentures, your GP or dentist may have said something like "you should see a dental prosthetist." And your first thought was probably: a what?
Don't worry — most people haven't heard the term before they need one. But once you understand what a dental prosthetist does, you'll see why we're the right person to trust with your dentures.
I'm Hussein — a dental prosthetist with 14 years experience in Sydney. Let me explain what I do, how it's different from what a dentist does, and why it matters for the fit and quality of your dentures.
The Simple Explanation
A dental prosthetist is a university-qualified healthcare professional who specialises in dentures and removable dental prosthetics. That means:
- Full dentures
- Partial dentures
- Implant-retained dentures
- Denture relines and repairs
- Custom mouthguards
It's all I do. Every day. For the last 14 years.
A dentist is a generalist who handles a broad range of dental work — fillings, extractions, root canals, cleanings, crowns, and yes, sometimes dentures too.
Think of it like this: a GP can treat a lot of conditions, but if you have a heart problem, you see a cardiologist. If you need dentures, a dental prosthetist is the specialist.
Dental Prosthetist vs Dentist: What's the Actual Difference?
| Dentist | Dental Prosthetist | |
|---|---|---|
| Training | General dental degree (5+ years) | Specialised prosthetist degree (3 years) |
| Scope | Fillings, extractions, cleanings, crowns, orthodontics, and more | Dentures and removable prosthetics exclusively |
| Denture making | Usually outsources to an external lab | Often makes dentures in their own lab |
| Daily focus | Variety of dental procedures | Dentures — all day, every day |
| Registered with | AHPRA (Dental Board) | AHPRA (Dental Board) |
| Can prescribe/extract teeth? | Yes | No |
| Can make and fit dentures? | Can take impressions; lab usually makes them | Takes impressions AND makes them |
Both dentists and prosthetists are registered with AHPRA and held to professional standards. The difference is focus. A dentist does many things. A prosthetist does one thing — and does it all day, every day.
Why Does It Matter Who Makes Your Dentures?
Here's the part most people don't know — and it's the most important thing I can tell you.
At many dental clinics, the process works like this:
- You see the dentist
- They take impressions of your mouth
- Those impressions are sent to an external dental lab
- Someone at that lab — who has never met you, never seen your face, never spoken to you — makes your dentures
- The dentures come back to the clinic
- The dentist fits them
The person who made your dentures and the person who fits them are two different people. If the fit isn't right, there's a communication gap. Adjustments take longer. Sometimes you end up going back and forth for weeks.
I do it differently. I take your impressions. I go back to my own lab. I make your dentures with my own hands. Then I fit them myself. If something's off, I know exactly what to adjust — because I made it.
That's what "I make what I fit" means. And in my experience, it's the single biggest factor in whether your dentures fit properly from day one.
Do You Need a Referral to See a Dental Prosthetist?
No. You don't need a referral from your dentist or GP to see a dental prosthetist. You can book directly.
Some patients come to me through their dentist — the dentist handles extractions, then refers them to me for dentures. Others find me on Google and book straight in. Either way works.
When Should You See a Dental Prosthetist?
You should see a prosthetist if you:
- Need new dentures — full or partial
- Have dentures that don't fit properly — loose, sore, uncomfortable
- Need a reline — your dentures used to fit but now they're slipping
- Need a repair — cracked, broken, or missing a tooth from your denture
- Want implant-retained dentures — dentures that clip onto implants for a secure fit
- Need a custom mouthguard — for sport or teeth grinding
- Want a second opinion — if you're not happy with dentures made elsewhere
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
1. We Talk
I start by listening. What's going on? Are your current dentures uncomfortable? Is this your first set? What are you hoping to achieve? I need to understand your situation before I look at anything.
2. I Examine Your Mouth
I check your gums, any remaining teeth, bone structure, and existing dentures (if you have them). This tells me what type of denture will work best and what challenges we might need to address.
3. I Explain Your Options
In plain English — not dental jargon. I'll tell you what I recommend, why, and what it'll cost. You'll get a clear, written quote with item numbers you can take to your health fund.
4. You Decide
No pressure. No sales pitch. If you want to go ahead, we book your next appointment and get started. If you want to think about it, that's completely fine. The consultation is free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a dental prosthetist a real doctor?
A dental prosthetist is a registered healthcare professional — not a medical doctor or a dentist, but a specialist qualified and regulated to make and fit dentures. We're registered with AHPRA, the same body that regulates doctors, dentists, nurses, and other health professionals.
Can a dental prosthetist pull teeth?
No. Dental prosthetists don't extract teeth. If you need extractions before getting dentures, your dentist will handle that. I work alongside dentists — they do extractions, I make the dentures.
Is it better to get dentures from a dentist or a prosthetist?
If dentures are what you need, a prosthetist is the specialist. A dentist can take impressions, but the dentures are usually made by an external lab. A prosthetist — especially one with their own lab like me — makes them personally. That hands-on control leads to a better fit.
How much does it cost to see a dental prosthetist?
I offer free consultations — no charge to assess your situation and give you a quote. The cost of dentures themselves depends on what you need. For a full pricing breakdown: How Much Do Dentures Cost in Australia?
